Manual Ultrasonic on Cr 25% Super Duplex Weldments
Requirement
The UK based client had a requirement to perform manual ultrasonics on Cr 25% Super Duplex weldments. Global NDT Consultants was approached to develop the UT procedure and perform the testability trials in accordance with BS EN ISO 22825.
Solution
Manual ultrasonics using a combination of various transducers was selected for the testability trials. The weld caps were ground flush which permitted a smooth transition for scanning from the parent material over the top of the weld. The approach employed angle compression transducers for the weld body, shear wave for the weld bevel fusion face and finally creep waves for the cap and root areas. Numerous Cr 25% Super Duplex welded samples containing seeded defects were successfully inspected.
Benefits
-
Proper transducer selection reduces material attenuation issues
-
High probability of detection (POD) for defects in Cr 25% Super Duplex weldments
